We have decided to use Steam as the primary channel for all Valheim-related news and updates. As the game enters Closed Beta and eventually goes ‘Live’ later we want to publish news directly on Steam anyway and maintaining two separate news channels is just unnecessary work, so we might as well make the move right away.
It`s Jan 1 2020 and I’m a bit hungover =). I will try to write a quick summery of this years happenings related to me and Valheim. It`s been an eventful year for sure. Crazy eventful to be honest. I have probably aged like 10 years …this year. So here we go =)
First important happening of 2019 was probably when Henrik Törnqvist joined me as my partner in crime. I have worked together with Henrik in many projects at our former employer Pieces Interactive so we know each other well. Henrik is a game designer at heart with a talent for structured and logical thinking, balancing weapon damage, building cool locations and generally fixing stuff. An invaluable addition to the Valheim development team and a good friend.
We moved in to our first office. Or actually two small office rooms in Skövde science park. It was not much, but it was home. And it was nice to get out from the apartment every day instead of sitting at home all the time.
So by this time I had only started a personal company out of necessity ( to be able to register as a steam developer etc ). But with HT onboard we quickly registered a new limited liability company and in the last minute I came up with the name Iron Gate! I like the idea that our logo is a gateway to other worlds. What lies beyond the iron gate?
Next huge thing happened, we kinda got a publisher…..but more on this some other time =)
And BAM!! My son Dante was born 20th of May!! Crazy right!? He is now 7 months old and is a huge cute baby at 12kg. He does not yet play Valheim, but I hope he will soon. It`s been slightly stressful to balance starting a company, making a game and having a baby to take care of when ever I’m not at the office. Fortunately for me, my fiance Marianne kept the fires burning and kept the Greydwarfs at bay while I was out hunting deer.
With the company up and running we soon found our first employee MR Robin Eyre. Honestly we could not be happier with the addition of Robin to the company. Not only is he an awesome concept artist, 3D artist and animator. But he is also a quick learner and had no issues switching to using Blender and Krita as his primary software tools instead of the more conventional software suits. On top of this, Robin has also become a good friend and is always there when you need a helping hand or someone to talk to.
The rest of the year we mostly spend working our asses of! Like 3 bearded vikings set on slaying The Elder!
Oh and late 2019 we finally moved to a another office. Its in the same building as before, but a few stairs up and a lot bigger. We now have room to grow some more. Which we hopefully will do this year =)
For 2020 we have a lot of plans. I don’t want to spoil things in advance though. So keep tuned and hang around our discord server so you wont miss anything important 😉
This update brings further refinements to the Mountains, and we consider the Biome as more or less complete for now!
The Hatchlings are now called Drakes, and they can most often be found roosting in nests containing Dragon Eggs instead of flying around aimlessly.
Yet another being has made the Mountains it’s home; the imposing Stone Golem!
You can now find a new material in the Mountains biome: Obisidian. These small, igneous rocks can be a bit hard to spot, but oftentimes there are a couple at any one location. They can be used for crafting Frost Arrows.
More Mountain Locations
We’ve added a few more locations of varying sort (abandoned log cabins, stone formations, etc) to the Mountains, so now the Biome doesn’t feel as empty as it did before.
The Mountains now has a boss, but what it looks like you’ll have to find out for yourself… 😉
This new armor provides Cold resistance which, since we added Blizzards last month, is very useful in the Mountains.
Waves are now tesselated, resulting in a much more dynamic sea.
Two new weapons have been added; the Bronze and Iron Mace. Great for bashing skulls!
The following new items are now available from Viking-Ikea:
- A magnificient throne.
- Improved table.
- Rustic benches.
- Trendy banners.
- A viking chair.
- A real fancy bed.
New UI Visuals
We got tired of the old UI so we gave it a facelift! Wood panels are always in style.
The minimap has also gotten some attention, it now has more accurately rendered Mountains.
Going forward, there are a lot of housekeeping and other boring stuff to be done as we prepare to expand the Beta… Please stay tuned for more news on that! 🙂
Haldor the Trader now open for business!
Got too much useless gold weighing you down? If so, you might be pleased to know that gold is no longer useless! A dvergr trader has started roaming the lands, and if you can find him he will have all sorts of wondrous dvergr inventions for sale. Bring a lot of gold though, his prices can be a bit steep…
The Wishbone is an utility item that can detect the presence of certain items and metals. Having it equipped produces a chime and visual effect which will intensify the closer you get to anything valuable.
Currently, the Wishbone can detect treasure chests and silver veins. Coincidentally, silver veins are now hidden beneath the ground.
The mountains have become infested with a new type of enemy: a flying Dragon Hatchling! It will harrass you from the air by shooting ice projectiles, so get yourself equipped with a bow.
This enemy is in no way any indication of what is to come in the future!
The mountains will now also suffer deadly snow storms… stacking the odds of survival against you even further. If you’re prospecting high up on the mountainside and a blizzard catches you, your best bet is to build some shelter post-haste!
Reworked Status Effects
We have made some changes to the way status effects are implemented and communicated to you. The most apparent change will be that the UI have been improved and moved up to the right corner of screen, next to the map.
Other changes include that Torches will no longer make you warm. In fact, the ‘Warm’ status will now be the default state of the player, negated by being cold or wet.
Sometimes even a viking needs a break, especially now as the world seems to grow more dangerous by the minute… By taking it easy for a bit, you will get a positive status buff called ‘Rested’.
Examples of relaxing activities: sitting down by a campfire, lounging about in your house, or sleeping in your bed.
We’re finally back after a well-needed vacation! Here are some of what we’ve been up to recently.
Adding new, interesting (and challenging) locations is an ongoing process. Most recently we’ve replaced some very old towers with new ones. These all use the random spawn-system, so you won’t see the exact same tower very often.
Hugin arrives on the scene!
The world of Valheim can be a bit much to take in sometimes. Hopefully this friendly raven can make it a bit easier for new players taking their first steps toward viking-dom. Who knows, maybe even veterans can learn something new?
Hugin is the first NPC added to Valheim and meant to guide newcomers in a somewhat non-intrusive manner. We will keep improving him throughout development!
It seems that some of the forest trolls have learned how to use tools! More precisely, they’ve figured out how to bash better…
Also, their complexion has changed from moss green to a dusky shade of blue!
Troll Leather Armor
The hides of trolls are notoriously thick and hard, yet supple and form-fitting once processed! We’re thinking that this armor is somewhat of a sidegrade to the bronze armor, altough we’re not entirely sure of just how… It looks kind of sneaky, so perhaps it should increase your sneaking efficiency somehow?
Logs are coming back in style
Finally, you can build your dream cabin with the use of rustic logs. However, not all trees are suited for this purpose so you must chop down the right kind, the kind dropping ‘Core Wood’-material.
Bigger equals better. You’re sure to be the most popular viking in the raiding party with this beast of an axe!
Robin arrives on the scene!
In other news; Iron Gate has recruited its’ first employee! Please welcome artist Robin Eyre, who will be responsible for the visuals of Valheim going forward. Have a look at some of his work here: https://www.facebook.com/ArtOfRobinEyre/.
Even though Iron Gate studio is currently on vacation, I could not help my self from putting some time into the project. Something we have talked about for a long time is to make the wind in the game more dynamic. In the old itch.io-version of the game , the wind in static and always blows from the north. Since we have many types of weather from calm & sunny to heavy fog and thunderstorms, it kind of makes sense for wind to be affected by this. So this experiment is about making wind direction and intensity change with time and weather. And of course making the environment react to the changing wind. Current systems that is affected by wind is Grass movement, Tree leaf ripples, sway direction & intensity etc, Sail & cape cloth simulation, ocean wave direction & height, Ship sail speed, leafs, rain, dust and other particle systems and wind noise.
Hello fellow vikings, and welcome to this experimental development update. As we’re currently adding lots of different stuff to the game, sometimes seemingly at random (don’t worry, we have a plan, maybe…), we thought it could be nice to highlight some of the cooler stuff. Please let us know in the Discord what you think about this sort of news update 🙂
A lot of new stuff has been added to the Swamp biome over the past few weeks. We have a new resource: The Gucksack. It grows high up on the trunks of trees, and can be used in the brewing of mead with antidotal qualities.
We also have a new enemy: The Leech. It swims around in the foetid pools of the swamps and attacks anyone daring to brave the waters! Not very friendly, but has the chance to drop Bloodsacks when defeated. Bloodsacks can be used for… nothing at the moment, but we have all sorts of cool things planned for the future.
Thistles now grow in the Swamp. Can be used as an ingredient in preparing Sausages, among other things.
Last but certainly not least, we have an update to the physics properties of the craftable Cart (normally used for hauling goods). This very nice update finally allows people to ride in carts pulled by other players!
That is all for the moment, we’ll update you when we have something new (or old) to share!
Elof the viking gazing towards the horizon.
As development on Valheim progress, we thought it would be nice to have a spot where you can read news about both the game and Iron Gate in general.
We would also like to use this space for blog-style updates about the development of Valheim, whenever we have something to share!
Although we have posted news on various platform up until now, our intention is to use this site going forward. It is a bit of an experiment, we’ll see how it goes… And don’t worry, we will still be active on Twitter and Discord.
