Valheim development update 3: Mountaineering Madness

Haldor the Trader now open for business!

Got too much useless gold weighing you down? If so, you might be pleased to know that gold is no longer useless! A dvergr trader has started roaming the lands, and if you can find him he will have all sorts of wondrous dvergr inventions for sale. Bring a lot of gold though, his prices can be a bit steep…


The Wishbone is an utility item that can detect the presence of certain items and metals. Having it equipped produces a chime and visual effect which will intensify the closer you get to anything valuable.

Currently, the Wishbone can detect treasure chests and silver veins. Coincidentally, silver veins are now hidden beneath the ground.

Dragon Hatchlings

The mountains have become infested with a new type of enemy: a flying Dragon Hatchling! It will harrass you from the air by shooting ice projectiles, so get yourself equipped with a bow.

This enemy is in no way any indication of what is to come in the future!


The mountains will now also suffer deadly snow storms… stacking the odds of survival against you even further. If you’re prospecting high up on the mountainside and a blizzard catches you, your best bet is to build some shelter post-haste!

Reworked Status Effects

We have made some changes to the way status effects are implemented and communicated to you. The most apparent change will be that the UI have been improved and moved up to the right corner of screen, next to the map.

Other changes include that Torches will no longer make you warm. In fact, the ‘Warm’ status will now be the default state of the player, negated by being cold or wet.


Sometimes even a viking needs a break, especially now as the world seems to grow more dangerous by the minute… By taking it easy for a bit, you will get a positive status buff called ‘Rested’.

Examples of relaxing activities: sitting down by a campfire, lounging about in your house, or sleeping in your bed.

We’re finally back after a well-needed vacation! Here are some of what we’ve been up to recently.

Adding new, interesting (and challenging) locations is an ongoing process. Most recently we’ve replaced some very old towers with new ones. These all use the random spawn-system, so you won’t see the exact same tower very often.

Hugin arrives on the scene!


The world of Valheim can be a bit much to take in sometimes. Hopefully this friendly raven can make it a bit easier for new players taking their first steps toward viking-dom. Who knows, maybe even veterans can learn something new?

Hugin is the first NPC added to Valheim and meant to guide newcomers in a somewhat non-intrusive manner. We will keep improving him throughout development!

It seems that some of the forest trolls have learned how to use tools! More precisely, they’ve figured out how to bash better…

Also, their complexion has changed from moss green to a dusky shade of blue!

The hides of trolls are notoriously thick and hard, yet supple and form-fitting once processed! We’re thinking that this armor is somewhat of a sidegrade to the bronze armor, altough we’re not entirely sure of just how… It looks kind of sneaky, so perhaps it should increase your sneaking efficiency somehow?

Logs are coming back in style

Bring out your inner woodsman and build a cabin to stand against the elements

Finally, you can build your dream cabin with the use of rustic logs. However, not all trees are suited for this purpose so you must chop down the right kind, the kind dropping ‘Core Wood’-material.

Working hard or hardly working?

In other news; Iron Gate has recruited its’ first employee! Please welcome artist Robin Eyre, who will be responsible for the visuals of Valheim going forward. Have a look at some of his work here:

Dynamic wind system

Even though Iron Gate studio is currently on vacation, I could not help my self from putting some time into the project. Something we have talked about for a long time is to make the wind in the game more dynamic. In the old of the game , the wind in static and always blows from the north. Since we have many types of weather from calm & sunny to heavy fog and thunderstorms, it kind of makes sense for wind to be affected by this. So this experiment is about making wind direction and intensity change with time and weather. And of course making the environment react to the changing wind. Current systems that is affected by wind is Grass movement, Tree leaf ripples, sway direction & intensity etc, Sail & cape cloth simulation, ocean wave direction & height, Ship sail speed, leafs, rain,dust and other particle systems and wind noise.

Valheim development update 1

Hello fellow vikings, and welcome to this experimental development update. As we’re currently adding lots of different stuff to the game, sometimes seemingly at random (don’t worry, we have a plan, maybe…), we thought it could be nice to highlight some of the cooler stuff. Please let us know in the Discord what you think about this sort of news update 🙂


Sick tree

A lot of new stuff has been added to the Swamp biome over the past few weeks. We have a new resource: The Gucksack. It grows high up on the trunks of trees, and can be used in the brewing of mead with antidotal qualities.


There’s something in the water…

We also have a new enemy: The Leech. It swims around in the foetid pools of the swamps and attacks anyone daring to brave the waters! Not very friendly, but has the chance to drop Bloodsacks when defeated. Bloodsacks can be used for… nothing at the moment, but we have all sorts of cool things planned for the future.


Don’t prick your finger!

Thistles now grow in the Swamp. Can be used as an ingredient in preparing Sausages, among other things.

Cart Taxi


Last but certainly not least, we have an update to the physics properties of the craftable Cart (normally used for hauling goods). This very nice update finally allows people to ride in carts pulled by other players!

Welcome to the News

As development on Valheim progress, we thought it would be nice to have a spot where you can read news about both the game and Iron Gate in general.

We would also like to use this space for blog-style updates about the development of Valheim, whenever we have something to share!

Although we have posted news on various platform up until now, our intention is to use this site going forward. It is a bit of an experiment, we’ll see how it goes… And don’t worry, we will still be active on Twitter and Discord.
